If you read (or listen to) this chapter—and only this chapter—here are some questions for discussion or reflection:

  • Imagine your country has lost a war and the opposing side—the winners of that war—are patrolling your streets. What would that feel like?
  • Picture men storming into your house and hauling your older brother away, but leaving you behind. How would you react?
  • What if local authorities set out to intimidate you or your family? What might you do?

These questions get at the heart of the action in chapter one.
